Communications in STEM

We connect students with the people who do science for a living. Kids can’t be what they don’t see.

Communications in STEM is an Oakland-based nonprofit bringing working scientists, engineers, and health professionals face to face with students — especially Black and Latino students in under-resourced schools — so a STEM career stops being an abstraction and becomes a person they have actually met.

About

Communications in STEM was founded in Oakland, California in 2018 by educator and science communicator CaTameron “CaT” Bobino, who was born and raised in Oakland. The organization grew out of a simple observation from her years interviewing STEM professionals: students cannot picture themselves in careers they have never seen up close, and the students with the least access to working scientists are the ones who most need to meet them.

Through live classroom visits, an in-depth interview series, and a show that follows STEM professionals at work, Communications in STEM puts real people in front of students — people who answer their questions, share how they got there, and make these careers feel close and possible. Its classroom program, My STEM Ed, reached approximately 100 students in its first year, run entirely without funding.

Programs

My STEM Ed

Live virtual visits from working STEM professionals, matched to what a class is already studying. Explorers brings career exploration to elementary and after-school students; Next Step 8 helps 8th graders connect science to the high school courses they are about to choose; Future Ready 10 helps sophomores build a STEM pathway plan for junior and senior year.

In The Know with CaT Bobino

An interview series in which CaT Bobino sits down with scientists, engineers, doctors, and astronauts to talk about the work itself and the road that led to it. More than 100 STEM professionals have been interviewed — the same vetted community of speakers who visit classrooms through My STEM Ed.

Inside STEM

A show that follows STEM professionals at work — in labs, in the field, and on the job — so students and families can see what these careers actually look like day to day, and picture a place for themselves in them.

For schools and districts
